Adult Basic Literacy

Paul’s Place partners with South Baltimore Learning Center to offer adult basic literacy classes beginning in October 2006. South Baltimore Learning Center teaches pre-GED and GED preparation classes two days per week, and a volunteer trained by Literacy Works provides additional tutoring and GED preparation on Saturday mornings. Adult learners spend up to 20% of class time in our computer lab, using the computers to further their literacy skills. In FY07, 20 adults enrolled in our new adult basic literacy classes.

Computer Skills Training

In November 2006, Paul’s Place opened a 24-station computer lab. The computer lab is open daily, except Wednesdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is staffed by a Computer Lab Assistant. On Wednesday mornings, Paul’s Place offers computer classes in six-week long sessions – Computer 101 and Intermediate Computer Class. In FY07, an average of 16 individuals used the computer lab each day, and 30 adults completed the Computer 101 or the Intermediate Computer Class.

Ambassador Program

Paul’s Place’s Ambassador Program offers unemployed adults, recovering addicts, individuals with limited employability, and senior citizens opportunities to increase their self-esteem, responsibility, and skills for employment while responding to the needs of Paul’s Place and the community. Ambassador volunteers are assigned jobs appropriate to their abilities, including greeting guests, serving lunch, organizing donated clothing, cleaning the building inside and out, and assisting with mailings. Each hour worked earns points toward essential bill payment (groceries, utilities, or rent). In FY07, 51 Ambassador volunteers worked more than 16,200 hours at Paul’s Place.
